F.A.Q.

Consistent tamping pressure is one of the most overlooked variables in espresso. When you apply exactly 30 lbs of force every time, you eliminate uneven compression that causes channeling and unbalanced extraction. The result is a more uniform puck density, which means your water flows evenly through the coffee bed. You will notice improved shot clarity, better crema, and far fewer wasted pulls while dialing in.

The size you need depends on your portafilter basket diameter. Most standard E61-style machines and many commercial setups use a 58mm basket. Machines like the Breville Bambino or older Breville models typically use 54mm, while some smaller or specialty machines require 51mm. Check your basket's inner diameter with a ruler or caliper to confirm. When in doubt, measure before ordering to ensure a snug, wobble-free fit.

The tamper body is machined from SUS304 stainless steel and aluminum alloy, both known for excellent corrosion resistance and longevity. Internal silicone components protect the spring mechanism from moisture and coffee oils. These are the same grades of material used in commercial espresso equipment, so the tamper is built to handle hundreds of daily tamps without degrading in performance or appearance.

Both bases deliver the same calibrated 30lb pressure. The flat base is the classic choice and works well for most grind sizes and dose levels. The ripple base features a textured surface pattern designed to create micro-channels on the puck surface, which some baristas find improves water distribution during pre-infusion. If you are experimenting with extraction evenness, ripple is worth trying. Otherwise, flat is a reliable all-rounder.

After each session, wipe the base with a clean, dry cloth to remove coffee residue and oils. Avoid submerging the tamper in water, as moisture can affect the internal spring mechanism over time. If the base needs deeper cleaning, use a slightly damp cloth and dry immediately. Store the tamper upright on its base or on a tamper stand to protect the surface and keep the springs in their neutral resting position.
